My_1st_impressions (3) freedom

1) Travel during low season. It is the best. Traveling in low season means you don’t find tons of people traveling with you on the same bus, boat, plane and tons of people and children in that amazing spot you were trying to see since a lifetime. Your pictures will be empty of pollution. No people around. Pure, as pure is the place you want to see and your love for traveling.
I went to Patagonia two years ago in April, just at the end of the tourist season and it was great. Not only I was alone and I could comfortably sit on the long distance buses that were bringing me around, but I also enjoyed Patagonia landscape and wonder without noise and people, and I could shoot wonderful photos because the atmosphere was incredible. At the Perito Moreno Glacier I barely saw few people all day and when I made it to Ushuaia it was snowing. I don’t think a lot of people can say the same.

2) Bring a guide book with you to follow the main lines, to check what there is to see and how to get there, but don’t go around with it in your hand. It’s the best way to look like a tourist. Your real guide is listening to the locals, meeting them and ask them where the best food is, what beer to drink, the most beautiful museum or monument, where you can listen to music and much more. Locals love giving advises.
Try to avoid the bars and restaurants of the guide books, you will finish to end up in places full of people with the same book on their table, and you will feel awful.
I remember New Zeland guide suggested an out-of-the-tourist-path hidden gem in the forest around Rotorua where you could bath in the warm waters of a river. According to the guide the place was unknown. Well, until they made it famous. When we went there, there were even families having their barbecue, and lots of people who had read the same and came to check.
Be smart, most of them are books for tourists not for travellers. Make a wise choice.

3) Don’t dress like a tourist. When visiting some counties, don’t go around with the typical trekking coloured clothes of the best brands in the field, sunglasses, ipads and stuff like that. Not only you look ridicolous, but you are also the best subject for pickpockets and for tourist hunters.

4) Sleep in a hostel.
It is the best way to get connections, especially if you travel alone. Yes, an hotel room with your own bathroom and television is nice, but you didn’t come all the way to the other side of the world to watch tv and have a bath in your comfy room.
Hostels are great places to hear and share good stories, to get tips about the places you are visiting, to often find new travel mates, to listen to others ‘ motivations about the reason why they are in the same place and at the same time like you. This already makes it special, don’t you think?

5) Couchsurf, if you can!
It is even better than staying in a hostel, as by couchsurfing you have the chance to be directly in touch with locals. If they are great hosts you may finish not only visiting the town and see it with their eyes, but also cooking and eating with them, going out with them and, at the end of all, finding a good friend for ever.

6) Travel alone, if possible.
Every destination is different from the others, as well as every travel. There are some travels you have to do alone and some others you have to do with others. However, get the change to travel alone, at least once in your lifetime. You will discover how big the world is, geographically and humanly and how far you can go only with your power, willing and energy.
If you manage to travel alone once, you are not going to be scared to go anywhere, anymore. The world will look much more beautiful after a solo trip.

7) Enjoy your travel with yourself….leave your facebook friends at home. They can hear about your stories when you are back. You travel also to run away from your daily life for a bit, so leave them back, live the moment, live the locals.
There is no need to spent your evenings in the hostel rooms chatting with your friend about how beautiful the place where you are is. Go to see that place, at days and night, you can tell them everything about the adventure you are going to leave if you go out and if you switch off all your devices.

8) Avoid the tourist tours.
Avoid the hop on-hop off buses, an expensive useless waste of money you can usually see the same by public transportations or simply by walking. Avoid the tourist tours in general. In every town in the world there is usually always a public bus or a tram that goes through the touristic path and in general it is cheaper and full of local people. Some of them are going to work, some others to shopping and so on. They are the locals. Observe them, listen to them and talk to them. No big story ever started with: “When I was on a touristic hop on-hop off bus”…
Always try to find an independent way to reach the place you want to see, and take all the time you deserve to sit there and enjoy.

If you want to avoid the tourist traps, then try to avoid the tourist tours!

9) Try to learn some sentences of the local language, if you don’t speak it. I usually learn at least the name of the week, the numbers, how to order a beer, how to say thank you ad ask how you are.

Meet the locals!

10) Always follow your heart and collect memories through your sensations. Your travel is not about how many cool thing you do. It is already cool the fact you are there. Your travel is amazing because you make it like this.

Always follow your heart. Even when you get lost!

1) Viaggia in bassa stagione.

I locali amano dare consigli.

4) Dormi in ostello.

You never travel alone. Traveling alone means traveling with yourself

8) Evita i tour turistici.

Osservali, ascoltali, parlaci. Nessuna grande avventura è mai iniziata con:” Quando ero su uno dei bus turistici hop on- hop off “…

Be unique. Do not follow the crowd.

Be unique. Do not follow the crowd.

When you travel don't follow neither others nor he guides...always follow your heart.
