Solstafir enlightning the festival

Solstafir enlightning the festival

Take an unknown, unpronounceable fjord of East Iceland, get a couple of friends, drive all the way there through pouring rain and find the most incredible, astonishing and amazing festival in the world: Eistnaflug.

Neskaupstadur, the amazing location of Eistnaflug

Neskaupstadur, the amazing location of Eistnaflug

On the second weekend of July the whole Metal scene of Iceland moves to East, toward Neskaupstadir, one of the most unbelievable locations ever to even think to be used as a set for a metal Festival. The place is hidden in the middle of a fjord among majestic mountains that keep changing colours and shapes according to what the wind, the fog and the sun decide to randomly do.

This tiny village is one of those beautiful quiet places where people imagine to spend their days when theya re old, but for once a year, every year since 2004, it transforms in the heart of the Metal scene of the entire country. Old people and kids disappear or become part of the crowd and all you see in town is people dressed in black with either long beard or long hair…or both!

Eistnaflug is again the proof that Metal festival are some of the coolest and peaceful festival you see around nowadays, despite the collective imaginary often without knowing anything about it draws wrong imagines of these kinds of events.

Metal people in Iceland love to be considered peaceful and tolerant people. They like everyone. It doesn’t matter who you are, we like and accept you”. That´s what my friend told me when talking about the great atmosphere in town and in the campsite and her words were so true, not only in Iceland but in general in every metal festival I have been around the world.
Unlike other festivals where most of the people are under drugs, here you don´t see anyone like that. There is a silent agreement between the police, government and organizers of the festival about the fact that if something bad happens here, like rapes, kicking or worse, they will shut down the festival forever. And everyone at the festival was proud to confirm that in 10 years there was never anything bad happening here. Just a lot of beer…but after all…we are in Iceland, aren´t we?

At Eistnaflug you happily wonder around, between one gig and another, one beer after another, meeting the same people for three days in such a great atmosphere that the square outside the concert hall becomes almost like a living room and you start to recognize the people around and very often you see, meet or talk with the singers and players of the bands you just finished to listen to.
For those worried that an Icelandic festival can be something freezing to attend, I am happy to tell you every concert happens indoor, inside a kind of theater where at times, it depends of the bands, you have the feeling that almost all the people of the festival are in it…at least you are warm!

Metal

Metal

About the bands at the festival, Eistnaflug is probably the stage where every dude busy with anything that can be called metal wants to stand at some point of his life in Iceland. And every year all the best and most famous names together with those less famous are all here. Useless to play anywhere else if all the metal people are here, anyway.
Don´t expect Icelandic Metal to be the kind of devilish voice metal music you imagine when you say the world METAL. Icelandic metal is some sort of more melodic concept of it and most of the time you can understand what they are singing about. This doesn’t make it less hard, death or whatever you like, though.

Mammut

Mammut

Solstafir got all my attention, passion and astonishment at Eistnaflug. Their performance was superior, same for their music. And in such a small and packed environment like the one of that theater it became something epic. Their Metal is something different from anything heard so far, it gets you into another level of passion and the atmosphere they create around rose the spirits. It was gorgeous!
They were certainly the peak of the Friday night show, together with Skalmond just after them who enhanced the night for one hour and a half. You could feel the vibration of the place while they were playing even from outside!

The second night was the night of a band called Ham, unknown to the rest of the world but able to enlight the smile of many around here even just at pronouncing their name. It looks like Ham is a band that rarely performs and was really on top of the Icelandic scene a decade ago. Well…considering what there was inside the concert hall while they were performing I can tell they are probably the masters of Metal in this country. Not only their music is powerful and energetic but the atmosphere they created, the vibes, the energy and the love of their public was so massive that at some point you could barely breathe in there. Those dudes certainly know how to keep the scene alive!
There is space for everyone at Eistnaflug and for those who like to listen to other than only Metal, on the Saturday night there is a bit of everything happening around, starting from Mammut, one of the most amazing Icelandic bands seen lately, who conquered the heart of the metal public like they do everywhere they play. Seriously good stuff.

And when the lights goes off and the music finish to be played, the party continues in the camping site, just few kilometers out of town, where the whole metal family of Iceland has set their tent for 4 days. It is the Metal village but the atmosphere looks more like a hippie place, with flags around, tables, barbecue, football tables and sofas, guitar players walking and singing around and people drinking, dancing and talking like the day is just started, going through the night that in Iceland doesn´t exist until late in the morning. All this in one of the most amazing natural landscape beauty ever seen in my life. Even when the fog hides everything, nobody leaves the camp site scene. You keep partying hard until suddenly you turn your sight to the mountains again and they appear once more, even more beautiful than before.
I didn´t sleep a lot at Eistnaflug….but this is a place and an event notmade to sleep at all.
Well done!

A bit of Africa even in Neskaupstadir: with Anna Begga, Andrea and Elisabet sipping happiness!

Nowhere better than this location for a festival

Nowhere better than this location for a festival

Metal people and yoga in the sunrise

Metal people and yoga in the sunrise

Solo birra, tanta birra…dopotutto siamo in Islanda, no?

and the show inside...

and the show inside…

The fjord in the fog

The fjord in the fog

Party time until late during the day

Party time until late during the day

My two great festival mates!

Well done!
