Oslo-Bergen

A tiny train station among the mountains on the Oslo-Bergen rail journey

They say the train that goes from Oslo to Bergen, in Norway, is one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, and they are right. The long train that picks you up at the Central station of Oslo and bring you across the forests and mountains of Norway, is a long and comfortable one, made to take care of you on the 8 hour rides that separate the two towns. It takes not longer than one hour to understand it and realize the ride you have started is one of those destined to stay impressed in your memory for quit a long time.

The landscape starts soon to become a snowy wonderland

Winter is sacred in the Nordic world. While Summer is wonderful and short, with its long days of lights and colors, it is in winter that those places reveal their real beauty and their soul. Same as for Iceland, if you really want to understand and love Norway you have to see it in winter, see how the Nature changes shapes and colour, how the snow and cold reshape the landscape around.

You get the feeling of entering into a new magical dimension as soon as the train leaves Oslo and enter in the forests of Norway. The morning darkness of the end of November allows you to sleep a bit longer and it is when you wake up that the most stunning surprise of all allows a smile to your face. You suddenly wake up to a landscape of white forests, frozen in space and time under the icy cold temperature of the night left behind and creating a fairy tale atmosphere that makes you forget that sleepy cuddles you were in just few minutes before. Here and there isolated farms or tiny vilages break the infinity of the white landscape. From there on the landscape keeps changing and mesmerize your eyes. The mountains grow high, neverending lakes and wonderful tiny station keep alternating your sight.

The train silently keeps its rhythmic march up the hills, skirting frozen lakes adorned by neverending ancient forests, sleeping under the white mantel of snow of the night before. The more the train goes in the deep of the mountain, the more the landscape changes. When you are at above 1000 mt latitude you start feeling much colder inside the train itself and outside the trees start to disappear. The surrounding resembles the Icelandic landscape now, with the Winter that has fully taken over the world.

Reaching Bergen by train is certainly the most beautiful way to do it and to cross Norway. I had forgotten how beautiful this country was. My memories of Norway belong to long time ago, to the time I started to travel the world. Norway was the first country that disclosed the beauty of traveling and of the world to my young eyes. Lots of memories and small details woken up my senses along the way. The smell of pølser in the station at 7 in the morning, reading the AftenPosten newspaper in the train, watching people eating hot dogs for breakfast, the voice, the same one of 10 years ago, in the train advising for “neste stasjon”, next station…it was all there, just a bit forgotten by the perception of the rest of the world with which I have been busy in the past 10 years, but all still there, waiting to be woken up again.

I had left Norway at the beginning of my adventures around the world 11 years ago. I came back 11 years later with a past full of places, stories, faces, experiences, memories lived every single day. Almost like another person. But the world outside is still the same, nothing is really changed, it is like entering in an old photo full of snow. And this is great when traveling, it helps remembering you who you were, how pure and where your dreams have brought you to. It is like making a point of the situation after so many days and years spent on the road.

That wonderful silent world outside the train, that extends itself for miles and miles, crossing valleys and mountains, leaving passengers a in the middle of nowhere and welcoming new ones from little stations lost in space, is one of the most peaceful scenes you can see in life. The snow seems to protect this place from the rest of the world, from the chaotic beginning in Oslo to the sweet end in Bergen. Nothing really exists on this train ride, it is like a magic ride through a world that doesn’t belong to anything else. Maybe this is the secret of magic and love everyone feels for it.

Oslo-Bergen by train

Oslo-Bergen: A train crossing Neverland

Oslo-Bergen: A train crossing Neverland
