Under the Northern Lights of my magic Iceland

Under the Northern Lights of my magic Iceland

Myvatn, October 4th, 2015.

So it’s ending, for now. My last day in Iceland for this year and for this winter is coming to an end, few hours more and I will be on a plane to go back there where I came from, to that Amsterdam I left 18 months ago in order to follow another crazy adventure.

My love story with Iceland is long, old and strong. It started five years ago, when I came to Iceland in winter for the first time and fell in love with this country and its magic. It took me two more visits to make up my mind and decide to give it more than a short stay as a chance to make it become mine forever. The excuse was the Northern Lights, as I never manage to see anything in 3 winter trips up here, and at the 4th effort I simply decided to move here and start another story. That circle that opened five years ago is now closing. I feel it. Iceland has been mesmerizing with me in the past 18 months. It is like if this country has made the most to make me link to it forever.

In one year and a half here I have experienced some of the most incredible experiences ever, from flying over an erupting volcano to stumbling into the majestic beauty of an ice cave under a glacier; I have seen a solar eclipse and a moon one; I have walked on a glacier and behind a waterfall, I have bathed in a hot spring inside a cave and seen the most amazing Northern Lights ever in the dark of the Nordic night. I have even been witnessing one of the roughest winters of the last hundreds years, up here, in Iceland, I have experienced what an Arctic snow and winter storm here and have drank beer in the neverending light of the Midnight sun. I have lived my daily life almost like a daily adventure every single new day I have been staying on this island, but most of all I have met dozens of new amazing friends, and shared with them some great memories that have contributed to make me calling this place Home, like I do with my home Italy and my home Amsterdam.

Iceland knows and loves me and I feel the same for this land. I feel to be part of it, to belong to it in a certain way and I also feel it will call me back at a certain point in the future. That’s why I am not leaving for good, I don’t feel I am doing this, I rather feel I am going for a holiday and that I will be back soon. I feel I will miss it. I will miss its landscapes, its beauty, its people, its music, its movement and its slow motion times. I will miss the purity and the heart of this country and this is probably what I will be longing to again when I go back to the real world. The real world seems always a bit far from up here, in reykjavik a bit less but outside int he countryside where I have been till now, it seems like another planet. And that’s one of the reasons I am going back. To go back to the real world and not forget about it. Good to know when i will be fed up of it once again, I have this place to come back again.

Reykjavik and Myvatn have been two different and great experienced on this island that have helped me to get the real essence of my tiny Iceland. Now I know its heart, the secret why so many people come back over and over again. At the end, i am one of them, too.

The Northern lights of the last few weeks can be almost seen like the end of the circle that started five years ago, when I came here to hunt the Lights and never saw anything. Funny that weeks before I have decided to leave, Iceland decides to finally show me the most mesmerizing Northern Lights ever, and every single night. I have been screaming of astonishment for the last few weeks every time the Northern lights have appeared in the sky. Never ever in my life I thought that show could have been so beautiful and emotional. Iceland has tried its hidden card to steal a promise to come back..and it managed to do it good.

So, here I am. Luggage done, camera in the backpack, passport ready, happy to leave for new adventures somewhere else on the globe and with a piece of my heart somewhere over the rainbows of Iceland.

Life is only one and I believe we have to make the most out of it. And living in different countries and meeting different people and living different lives is one of the way we can celebrate life and make it really worth to be lived.

An old woman  told me this summer in Myvatn, “It is good you go to see the world and how big and different and beautiful it is now that you are young. You will be richer in your older days. You have all your old age years to visit your own country and meet people who speak like you, eat like you and think like you. The real life is one and is out there”.

I am not gonna stay here and explain you why if I love Iceland so much I am living. If you have ever done something like that in life, you will understand it. It is all worth.

And it will probably make coming back here worth more.

Time to go.

Bless bless!

Bless Bless.
