View of Teotihuacan site and the Pyramid of the Sun on the left from the Pyramid of the Moon

Stepping up all its 248 steps to get to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun, the highest temple of Teotihuachan site, resembles Icaro’s long way towards the sky trying to touch the Sun.

The Pyramid of the Sun, the third highest pyramid in the world

The Pyramid of the Sun, the third highest pyramid in the world after Cheope, in Egypt and Cholula, also in Mexico, is the most stunning monument you can find on the site. It stands up on its impressive 75 meters, and reaching up its top and having a look at the entire Citadel at its feet literally gives goosebumps, and not only for the altitude. Massive and majestic at the same time, they say you should touch the floor of its top when getting there as it gives you energy and connect you with the Sun. What really connects you to the Sun is actually the view from the top of it, the view of the site around, of the Pyramid of the Moon in front , of the steep steps that have brought you up there and most of all of the people, looking so small down there at the base.

Just as like as facing other ancient buildings such as the Parthenon in Greece or the Colosseum in Rome, standing on top or in front of the Pyramids of Teotihuacan should make you aware of the fact those buildings and its memory belong to all of us as a human kind, they are the silent witness of the greatness of human mind and creativity without any difference of races or anything.

A Mayan ritual happening at the feet of the great pyramid

The Pyramid of the Sun is an anthem to the greatness of people we know nothing about, we barely study in one or two chapters of our history book at school, of people we keep apart of our history and past while we keep looking at them as exotic and far away. The pleasure of being in place like Mexico is that these people are among us, they walk in the streets we walk, we can see them around us, x appreciate their gentle spirit, learn about their culture, eat their super spicy food, listen to their music and talk to them. We can see places like Teotihacan becoming alive with the heirs of its Ancient people, like this it is a bit easier to imagine how powerful and impressive that site must have been, what the 1st impressions of people getting there would have been when they arrived at the entrance of a Citadel that counted almost 200000 people at its highest peak, and how it may have looked like to see the entire square full of people when immolating human sacrifices in the name of the Sun god.

The Pyramid of the Moon, half size of the Sun one

When walking towards the Pyramid of the Moon, smaller than the Sun’s one, check how the more you walk closer the more the mountain behind disappears. The Pyramid that looked so small from far away, suddenly gets huge when standing in front of it at its feet.

Out of the two, it is just this one the most difficult to climb as the steps are steeper and higher. Mind the altitude on both of them, as many people feel sick when trying to get to the top. Take your time, breathe, look back once in a while to check where you stand on the pyramid, on the world you belong to. Teoutihuacan is gonna probably stay in your mind for a very long time. In mine for sure as it is the first site ever I visited of these Ancient civilizations that so much entertained my imagination when I was younger. Reaching the top of that Pyramid today has meant a lot to me. It has reminded me of all the crazy days of my Icelandic Summer spent at work, dreaming of this trip, of each and every step and destination, of all the Icelandic crazy days and nights talking about it, about this unbelievable feeling of freedom in front of beauty and perfection that nothing in your boring, routined world, could ever substitute with.

Teotihuacan from the Pyramid of the Sun

Climbing steps to reach the Sun

On the Pyramid of the Moon
