Jamaica, Bob Marley

Bob Marley , an icon of a country we barely know anything about…

What do I know about Jamaica? Before this trip, I knew Bob Marley, reggae and rasta concepts, weed plantations and not much more.

Jamaica was one of those mythical lands that belongs to our imagination, full of stereotyped images that makes us love a place more for what it represents than for how it really is.

Now, after 10 days on the road of this amazing country, I can tell you a bit more about it, so let’s cancel the stereotypes we know and start looking at Jamaica with new eyes.

Jamaica, Kingston

Kingston’s market, downtown.

SAFETY AND CRIMES:

Yes, Jamaica is not the safest place in the world, but some common sense will make you able to walk around everywhere without much troubles. Many people travel to Jamaica alone, that means it is still possible to do it, but said that, you need to keep your eyes well opened , especially if you are a woman. Keep in mind that you are a tourist, and white. And therefore visible. Youa re not one of them, but you can make some efforts to look like, and this will make your life easier. Dress not to impress. Dress to camouflage yourself. And try to look “dodgy”, I call it “gangster style”, that is Jamaican style. It won’t make you become invisible, but it will help a bit not to be harassed at every corner of the street. Also, wear sunglasses all the time. It will help you to avoid eye contact, which is the main mean of approach by Jamaican people. Don’t wear fancy clothes or jewels, and don’t go around with your mobile or camera in your hands. If you want to take a photo, get your camera out, shot it and take put it back. You will avoid a lot of unwanted attention, especially by men. And, the good old advice not to go around alone at night, especially in isolated places, is always valid and works all the times. Common sense will help you to make it safe, but relax also and enjoy the vibes. Don’t be too aggressive to people harassing you, else you will never get rid of them, but let them understand you are not interested. Call them “man”, use their slang, feel integrated in their world and you will be ok and even be able to gain their respect. Yaman!

MUSIC:

Jamaica is not only reggae. Not at all.

The music you will listen loud everywhere is mainly hip hop and dance hall. That’s what most Jamaicans love.. They love to listen to it very loud everywhere, from the streets to the taxis or the minivans, but also in the bars or in their wild parties. They simply love hip hop. It is their social music. This doesn’t mean they don’t listen to reggae, but this kind of music is more for their relaxing moments, mainly at home. Or it is the music they play in bars for tourists. Every tourist company on the island will play Bob Marley when there are tourists. As usual, it is them who create the stereotype we are used to imagine.

Jamaican, jerk chicken

Jerk chicken is the most famous and delicious Jamaican dish

FOOD:

Jamaican food is awesome, if local. Impossible to resist to jerk chicken or pork, festivals, patties or fried plantain. And not to talk to all the different kinds of weird fruits available in every corner of the street, like star apples or akee. After a couple of days in Jamaica, you start to recognize the smell of jerk chicken from far away and you will crawl for it.

But there is one think you don’t expect in Jamaica: the big amount of junk food and fast food companies, all around . Every place, even the smallest village in the middle of nowhere, has a fast food place, called by local restaurant, that often sells the same food you can find in the streets, but at a higher price and most probably frozen. Not to talk about Burger Kings in all the major cities and tourist spots, opened maybe to attract tourists that actually prefer to go local while these fast food places are actually full of locals. It doesn’t make any sense at all. The food is definitely worse than the Jamaican street food, and it is more expensive.

Jamaicans: a world themselves

PEOPLE:

People of Jamaica! A book would be needed only to talk about them.

They aways manage to surprise you, with their messy and noisy presence.

Useless to say, if you are a solo female traveler, you will be object of attention from almost every Jamaican man you will meet in the street. Men love to get your attention and to bother women. It is something you have to get used to it and not give a lot of importance, to survive. It is very similar to Africa. Women are instead more reserved and they can be super gentle, especially to other women or they can just ignore you, like it happens most of the time. But when you don’t expect it, you suddenly meet some of the greatest characters ever. And this makes you get peace with all of them. In general, Jamaicans are cool.

PRICES:

Jamaica is an expensive country. Considering most of the people earn an average of 50 USD per week, the Westernised prices for everything are way too expensive for locals, and for tourists too.

After the flight, the biggest expense is the accommodation, that never goes under 15 USD. Even the food is pretty expensive for the place where you are and for what you eat. A portion of jerk chicken, with no sides and no drinks, bought in the streets, costs about 4USD. Transportations are expensive too, but there is a cheap option for this, and it is the local minivan that cross all the country. You will be squeezed in the middle of 40 people, but it will cost you 1/3 of what you would pay with an official bus.

Shared taxis are another cheap option that ill bring you around every town and village you will be going and that will make you spare money.

CULTURE:

Unlikely its neighbor Cuba, Jamaica doesn’t have anything to do with Latin or Central America. Jamaica is Caribbean, and most of all it is African.

There is so much that resembles and reminds of Africa over there. Starting from the social life and approach to life, lived outside and shared with others. As soon as you step into a market in Jamaica, you will recognize features seen down in Western Africa. It is incredible to see and think that this people have managed to keep, build and develop a world that is so similar to the one they originally come from, and that is thousands of kilometers away on the other side of the ocean. Jamaica is African in many aspects, from the way of transports to the food, the houses and the mind set. It took me only a day to fit in that again, I just had to take the time to remember how Africa was and then I was in it again. It is like centuries of English domination have done nothing to the real soul of these people, to their identity and to their nature. I love and respect them a lot for this. Their culture is a strong one, with a world that it is all theirs. They get influences from outside but their Jamaican feeling they are so proud of is very strong and doesn’t get corrupted by outsiders. They have their own food and music and they love it. They speak about the rest of the world, but then they deeply love their country and they are proud of talking about it. They are independent and free, and different from the rest of the world. When you leave the country and you see Jamaica disappearing under your plane among the clouds, you have a feeling you are not only leaving an island, but leaving an entire parallel world that has nothing to do with the rest. This must be the real secret of this country and the reason why you either love it or hate it, but when you love it, you end up loving it forever.

In Jamaica

Traveling with the Jamaicans is an adventure!

Cosa so della Jamaica?

Jamaica, Kingston

They say downtown Kingston is not the safest place of Jamaica, but if you use common sense while visiting it, you will discover a new world!!

SICUREZZA E CRIMINE:

Yaman!

Jamaican music

Real parties with Jamaicans are not for sissies!!!

MUSICA:

Jamaican food

Jerk Chicen, Festivals and Fried Plantain, together with a Red Stripe Beer. Jamaican happiness!!!

CIBO:

E’ molto simile all’Africa.

Jamaica

Jamaica resembles so much a West Africa country
