In the past few years Iceland has become of of the most touristic travel destinations in the world. It is almost impossible to go anywhere without find yourself surrounded by such a crowd of tourists that you almost wonder if what you are looking at is a waterfall or rather Monna Lisa.

Would you like an advice? Travel with locals. And by “locals” I don’t mean your local guide who will bring you to the tourists spots. I mean local people. Those who know the secrets of their countries. Your local friends, the local owners of your guesthouse, people you meet on your days of wander around the island. As Icelanders are very friendly and sociable I am pretty sure it is impossible you don’t meet any of them during your stay. And believe me all Icelanders know a secret spot of their beautiful island. Those kinds of spots they don’t share with anyone. Just with their friends and other Icelanders.

I found one of those secrets of Iceland and even though I am not gonna reveal you where it is I’d like to share the beauty of such a place.

Hot spring water hidden among a canyon made of lava stones

Hidden in a canyon of lava stones difficult and dangerous to reach for those who are not used to, there is a hot spring of clear blue water waiting for you. The place is like a hidden forgotten paradise on Earth. At times it gets really full of locals who use to go there to bath and drink in company. Sometimes they enlight candles in it, making the atmosphere even more magic. They say young Icelanders are allowed to get down there only when they are teenagers, and imagining the adventure that means at that age makes you feel jealous of them.

Tourists are not allowed. The place is in a private property whose landlord has allowed locals to bath in it. Only locals. No tourists please. That’s what makes this place special. It is still a place where you can find the pure Iceland.

When you go deep down there you feel like you are hiding yourself from the crowd that you have left behind just few kilometres away. It is like getting clean again from a country that is too small for all the people who want to welcome in it!

If you are lucky enough to find it, I can just tell you: enjoy every moment!
