 Istanbul Spice Bazaar

Much smaller, quieter and nicer than the chaotic Grand Bazaar and its 4000 shops, there is one place that has to be on your must visit list in Istanbul, and that is the Spice Bazaar. As soon as you enter in it, you are thrown into a mesmerizing labyrinth of scents that wake up all your senses.

Tea and spices coming from all over the world get to the Spice Bazaar of Istanbul

It is a pleasure for the eyes and the soul to walk inside and observe, touch , taste and smell all the possible spices existing in the world.

Let’s have a look!

Chilly peppers hang from the roof of almost every shop while inside it is a paradise for the brave one who love strong taste. My advise: Go for the chilly paste of the Scorpion Chilly if you want to feel a bit happier than before.

The highlights of the market are certainly the spice stalls, where all the possible and impossible spice coming from all over the world are shown. The smell in the air is strong, the colours are vivid, and those silent spices tell you of ancient roads crossed in the centuries to arrive in the heart of this city that for centuries as been the capital, the door and the connection between two world that there, among those market streets, met and knew each other.

Chilly powder and chilly paste of all sort are your challenge when at the Spice Bazaar

My favorite stall of all was definitely the olive stall where all possible kind of olives of all colours, shapes and filling lay there waiting for you. The cost of a kilo of olives is almost nothing compared to the rest of Europe and the taste is of Mediterranean sun and warm days. The olive filled with lemon made my day so much happy that I bought a bag of them and ate them all during the day until few minutes before I went to bed….ask my friend Despina if you don’t believe me!

My favourite stall of all: the olive ones

The Turkish delights, called Lokum, are another must when in Turkey. There are all kind of Lokum at the market. The chocolate one, together with the pistachio one were the top but a try has to be given also to the jelly ones, especially the ones of pomegranate. Check around for the best price negotiate as Turkish people are great master in the art of commerce.

Lokums, Turkish delights are presented so nicely that before even trying them they look already delicious!

Coffee is anything typical of the Spice Bazaar but I’d like to add it as it is a must to try when in the country. It is unfiltered, that means at the bottom of the cup there is all the coffee powder, used by people toread you the future by the way, so it is wise, despite the bitter flavour if the coffee, to avoid putting sugar in your cup.

Not my favourite Turkish thing in the world. And don’t put sugar in it!

Simit bread stalls become so much part of your daily landscape when you are in Istanbul that it is difficult to say if they really are or not in the Spice Bazaar. Try the Simit in the morning, when they are fresh and just baked, as in the evening they are not as good and fresh anymore.

Even if not typical of the Spice Bazaar, you finish to get attached to the Simit, around town.
