Time to leave Reykjavik and move on

Time to leave Reykjavik and move on

Lately time has started to go very fast here in Reykjavik, and with (Icelandic) summer approaching quickly it is now time to finally start actioning my travel plans.

Still frozen Lake Myvatn

Today I left Reykjavik and moved North. Yes, you heard it well. Further North. I moved on the shores of Lake Myvatn, in one of the most beautiful and richer in beauty areas of Iceland, in a little village called Reykjakið, where I will be working and living until the end of September.

It is a new adventure. The village is really small. Only 300 people regularly live there, even though in summer tourists fill the area around. I have never lived in such a small place. It is exciting. A bit scary too, of course, but that is normal. The area is full of natural beauties, though with lots of activities to do in the free time: from hiking paths which surround the area around, leading to mountains and on top of volcanoes, to hidden hot spring inside lava rock caves, like the one where I bath last year. It is a great spot to live a summer in Nature, to finally enjoy the real heart of Iceland, its nature and essence.

Good Bye Reykjavik

Good Bye Reykjavik

Bit sad to leave Reykjavik, too, of course, for my friends and the beautiful people met this year, but life in Reykjavik is always the same, not much changing from one year to another and I have the feeling I’d get bored anyway if I’d stay one more summer year, considering weather in summer is much better in the North than in the capital.

The real reason of my moving has to do with my next projects, though.

These 5 months in the North will help me to spare money, things impossible to do in the capital.

The plan, the real travel plan, is to go home in October to enjoy a bit my family, my nephew Manuel and my doggy mate Pluto, with a stop over in Amsterdam to give a hug to my second family over there, my friends and best friend I miss so much.

In November I will be finally leaving and the real adventure will start again. Destination South America.

I have always dreamt to travel across South America for 6 months. I think I remember me dreaming and talking about it since I am a teenager. Well, that time is coming. I will be traveling around the continent, following the Andes, my beloved Andes, the mountain ranges I love the most, between Argentina and Colombia. In order to make the plan more sustainable and also for a personal developing , I plan to stop in few places and volunteer, too. WorkAway in this has tons of inspirations. I just have to decide and choose the program I love the most. WorkAway is a great way to travel cheap, as in most of the cases you are given free board and accommodation in exchange of few daily ours of work, but also a great way to meet locals, being hosted by them or working with them. And there is nothing as fullfilling than spending time with locals when traveling, getting to know their habits, sharing their point of vies, learning from them. This is the part I am looking forward to, all the time, and in South america I will try to do it as much as possible. Between one project and another I also want to travel around, of course.

So much to see. Cuzco, Macchu Picchu and hiking the Inka trail are on my top list, but also Lake Titikaka, the Salinas and the Death road in Bolivia, ValParaiso and its magic colours in Chile and most probably the Tapati festival on Easter Island, too. And much more.

I will come back in Europe in Spring and probably back to Iceland again, where I will be working hard again for my next adventure, in two years: The Mongol Rally. But that is another story….

Too much to even start thinking of. I will start planning soon, as soon as I will be settled again in Mvatn.

So in few days I am again without a key, without a house, without friends, but on the road, ready to find my new house and my new friends in the next place. I love my life!

A summer in the Icelandic magic countryside

A summer in the Icelandic magic countryside

Fra pochi giorni lascio reykjavik e mi sposto a Nord.
