My_1st_impressions_from the sky

The story:
Last year on my way back from my unforgettable trip in Patagonia, I unfortunately had the worse experience ever in my life as a traveller.
I took a local flight to Santiago del Chile, and there I had to catch the flight to Madrid, where I was gonna take another flight to finally arrive at home for Queensday in Amsterdam.
When I arrived in Santiago, already inside the airport at the gates, as my flights were connected, I was happy. My trip had been great , I had been travelling through the most beautiful places in the world and I was tired enough to just feel like going home.
I waited for an hour and a half, sipping my coffee and then, half an hour before the taking off, I finally went to check the screen in order to find my gate.
It was exactly in that moment that my bad adventure started.
The screen said my flight was delayed. I didn’t get too worried at the beginning. I went to look for someone to ask for more info but there was nobody who could tell me more. Slowly all the other flights, the ones that were supposed to take off later than mine, left. My flight was slowly going down in the screen that kept saying “delayed” until it finally disappeared.
My_1st_impressions_the sky (4)I was there, in Chile, inside Santiago airport, with a swollen knee due to my motorbike crash in Ushuaia, that didn’t allowed me even to walk properly, alone and exhausted , with my entire route planned to make it to Amsterdam in 24 hours and suddenly everything got worse.
First thing I thought it was to go to look for someone of Iberia staff and ask for information.
There was nobody from Iberia in the entire airport.
Not even at the gate where my plane was supposed to leave from. Nothing. Nobody.
I went to ask to the crew of other companies but of course they couldn’t help me. In those moments, that quicly became hours, I started to panic. My flight had disappeared from the screen, from the airport, there was nobody from Iberia I could ask information and all the people working there even didn’t know what I was talking about.
I even went to ask some help to the policemen that were there. They suggested me to go somewhere at the lower floor and ask the airport information desk.
I did that, I went downstairs and the only think they could do for me was to give me a pre paid phone card that I could use to call Iberia for free for 15 minutes.
I found a phone and I called and called and called. Nobody from Iberia office replied.
I was so worried and didn’t know what to do anymore. I didn’t know what to do and I was also conscious that I had lost my second flight , from Madrid to Amsterdam.
It was only around midnight that incredibly, my flight, with the same flight number than the one on my papers, appeared again on the screen.
I went at the gate and there I met few more people who had had the same destiny and had spent all day of anguish in the airport.
Slowly all the passengers of the plane appeared, and there we discovered most of them had been advised at the entrance of the airport by Iberia staff that the flight was delayed and all of them had been sent in a 5 star hotel to wait there. Iberia had just totally forgotten those who were already inside the airport!!!
I asked one of the staff, that finally appeared after 14 hours, what I was supposed to do with my flight to Amsterdam, as I had lost it, and she guaranteed me that Iberia would have taken care of it.
Well, it was not true. When I arrived in Madrid, the day after, at 11 in the evening, Iberia hadn’t guaranteed me anything because my second flight was not with them, and they just left me there, in the airport, at night, with all their arrogant staff telling me it was not their problem.
I met a woman on the flight and I spoke with her during the flight. When we arrived in Madrid, Iberia had even lost her suitcase.
That was the top!
I have to thank my friends as they bought another ticket online for me for the morning afer.
So I slept my second night on the floor of an airport, with my knee that at that point felt like broken.
When I arrive in Amsterdam, the day after, it was Queensday. It was crazy. I was dead tired but still spent all day around town.
And then, when the party was finished and I had had a good sleep at home, I decided to contact Iberia to get some money back.

Iberia Customer Service
If you write a message to Iberia using their website, you get an automatic reply that informs you, most probably in Spanish, that Iberia will reply to you within 21 days!!!!! Best service ever!!!
So, after waiting for almost a month, a woman replied and told me she truly understood my complaint and was happy to inform me Iberia would reimburse the full lunch and dinner spent in the airport.
Yes, because according to them, I was in Santiago, with no news and none of them to ask to, and in the meanwhile I was having a great dinner there!!!
I barely bought a bottle of water in the airport. I was so upset, worried and angry at this company.
I replied to the girl, through the website as you cannot do it though your email, and what I received was a copy pasted email, identical to the one already received. And this went on and on, I received 7 emails, all looking the same, all identical, copy pasted from a template, where they offered me the money back of my meal.
My hopes came from FlightDelayed.co.uk, an English company that helps people dealing with the bureaucracy of flight companies.
I was lucky because last year the EU also approved a new law about the right to get up to 600Euros back from flight companies if the delays are more than 2 hours.
So, together with FlightDelayed.co.uk we started our fight, lasted one year and a half.
In this time, Iberia has always tried to make things more and more difficult. Often they didn’t reply, and when they had to admit that I had won they made a lot of problems with my bank details, as they said they could accept only Dutch accounts, and not English ones.
Anyway, today, I finally won an receive my money back. 600 Euros, for a ticket paid 750, but also for the worse service ever experienced in life.

What do to and Advises:
I personally will try to never ever fly with Iberia again. If you do it, please be aware of the following:

I hope for you it won’t happen, but in case…..now you know what to do.

My trip in Patagonia had been fantastic, until iberia ruined the end

Mi sentivo presa in giro.
