The bay of Isafjordur protected by its beautful mountains

It was the end of November when I landed to Isafjordur, on the North Western fjords of Iceland. Useless to say it was cold, very cold.

In Reykjavik my flight had been cancelled for two days in a row, due to the stormy weather conditions in he North. I had almost lost my hopes to reach this hidden corner of the world, promising myself to try once more before abandoning the idea. It was already the second time I was trying to reach it, in winter. The first time, one year earlier, I tried by bus, but in March the roads were still frozen and no bus was getting there until May.

The second time I got stubborn and decided t try by plane.

At the airport they cancelled the flight on the first day and also on the second, my only hope was to trust the wise advice of someone at the airport who suggested me to be patient and wait,as he felt the airport at Isafjordur might have reopened in the afternoon. I don’t know how nor why, but I listened to the guy and sat there for other 6 hours waiting for it until they finally announced that so it was, Isafjordur airport was reopened. I think in that moment I was the most happy person on the whole island.

The arrival of the post by plane

The flight was terrible, on a small plane with a lot of turbulences and wind, for more than a moment I thought we would have crashed right on one of the mountains we were flying beetween, and at the same time it was also incredibly beautiful, especially to think about the fact thee people have to do it all the time to reach their homes up there. The landscape was simply breathtaking, the plane was flying between the snowy peaks of the mountains who were falling into the fjords, on dark waters surrounded by white landscapes.

When I landed on Isafjordur and went out of the small airport, I couldn’t believe at my eyes. I was under one of those mountains, I could see the town and it was almost dark and full of snow everywhere, and it was just amazing to think about where I was in that exact moment.

When I took the bus to go downtown, the driver stopped not far from the airport to pick up the newspapers, that arrived that day after days of tomr. There was probably one meter of snow, it was getting dark at around 3.30 but everything looked just beautiful and I was just at the top of my travel happiness!

In town Graham, my couch surf host, came to pick me up and walking through the silent and white town, surrounded by snow and beauty, I felt like I just got to one of the most beautiful places not only of Iceland but also of the whole Planet. I felt in love with Isafjordur at the first sight, at the first breath of its chilled and friendly air, at the first meeting with its lovely and welcoming inhabitants, who were so curious to discover why someone goes over there in the middle of winter and not in summertime, like the rest of the tourists. I may be not a tourist I replied, an like this I talked with the woman of the caf’e for one hour.

I spent 3 days in Isafjordur, and got the feeling I didn’t want to leave anymore.

Gorgeous Isafjordur!

Gorgeous Isafjordur!

I spent the days walking in town and outside, taking pictures, meeting the locals, enjoying the wonderful feeling to be somewhere uknown to most of the people, and for this special.

I even tried to see th Northern Lights, but on the night I and my guide decided to giv it a go, a snow storm was getting ready to hit the town and block t for another week.

We went on the top of a mountain, at least to give a try, but the sky was too cloudy to even try to get any hope alive However the view fro the top of the mountain was outstanding, the entire Isafjordur was laying in the valley, shining in the night and enlightning the surrounding mountains and the entire fjord. Peaceful, silent and wonderful is the only way to describe such a view, softened by the smooth atmosphere created by the snow around and by the storm that was slowly getting closer and closer.

Night view of Isafjordur before the snow storm

I couldn’t see the Northern light abut it didn’t really matter at all, as the view up there and the feeling of being on the top of the world was already enough to make me fee happy anyway.

That night the snow started to fall heavily and I started to get worried to be blocked there for a while,a s the airport may have been closed again. The sunrise was around 11.30 in the morning and when the sun started to appear a bit behind he mountains I found the entire town under a deep layer of snow. When I went out of the house and got my last walk in town I couldn’t stop admiring the beautiful houses of the town, already adorned with Christmas decorations and looking so cozy and warm, before rushing to the airport with the semi hope to make it back to Reykjavik. Hidden in my heart there was maybe the hope to stay there for anther bit…

I even got lucky enough to see a sunny winter day

I even got lucky enough to see a sunny winter day

Anyway I made it, and even if late I managed to take the last plane before the airport got cosed for another week. When Isafjordur disappeared under the clouds just after the plane took off I felt sad and nostalgic of such a corner of heaven that I was lucky enough to pursue and discover.

I hope to be back again, Isafjordur of my heart!

This is the page of my diary I wrote on my second day in town, when I went to discover the hills surrounding the area and had to sit for a while in the cld to really understand where I was.

Isafjordur, 30th November 2011

Isafjordur: is there any other place more beautiful than this, on Planet Earth?

Infinite is stealing a part of myself up here. I cannot stop looking at what surrounds me, at this place and its beauty, at its majestic shapes, and feel like I have been lucky I made it here. I cannot stop taking pictures of this place, knowing they will never be able to really show how beautiful it is.

Today it was a glorious winter day. The mountains on the East are too high, so the sun doesn’t really make it to shine directlyon the town. The sun can only shine reflecting itself on the top of the mountains, on the West side, enlightening the peaks with a soft pink colour, reflecting itself in the water and finally giving the ton a hint of colour.

In this moment I am half way to one of the peaks. Cannot go further than this, because of the snow.

Everything surrounding me is so silent and peacefull. The rest of the world seems not to exist up here.

Today a huge wave got me when I was next to the sea. Scary. I got frozen in few minutes while I was running home to get changed. What an adventure in Isafjordur, sweet homeland of dreams.

This is the real Wonderland, where all my fantasies about the Nordic World have finally found a house.

My diary and where I wrote this page

My diary and where I wrote this page

Leaving Reykjavik, after 2 days waiting for my flight

Leaving Reykjavik, after 2 days waiting for my flight

I'll be back!

I’ll be back!
