Yucatan cenote, Mexico

Xkeken cenote in all its majestic beauty

There is something magic when entering a real cenote, in a cave, in Yucatan. The impression you have is that it is pretty much how entering a parallel universe, an underworld that allows you to live the hot, humid and noisy world to step into the underground, into a cave opened on the top where the water can enter inside and form a lake of deep, sweet water hidden to the rest of the world.

Yucatan region, in Mexico, is full of underground cenotes. They say they got formed milions of years ago there where a meteorite fell on the ground. Nobody knows if it is true or not but one thing is true: Yucatan is the only area of Mexico to have this kind of cenotes. Nowhere else in the country it is possible to find them like that.

Just outside the town of Valladolid, in Yucatan, there are two cenotes that, despite being super touristic, are definitely a must see when entering the region. It is kind of your welcome to the wonderland of cenotes you can see around.

Yucatan cenote, Mexico

Out of the two, Xkeken, or known as Dzinup, from the name of the nearest village, is definitely the most impressive of the two. Entering in it through some small, narrow and steep steps is already impressive. The cenote is in a proper cave with a small hole on the vault from where you can see the water come in when it rains. The waters are cold, deep and dark blue full of fishes. It gets pretty busy during the day but it definitely worth a visit. Xkeken will leave you a long impression lasting for a while, especially if it is the first real cenote you will visit in your life.

Samula, its twin cenote just few meters away, is darker but it keeps the same fascinations. I loved the tree roots falling down from the roots, getting down to touch the water where they belong to. The thirsty tree on the hole on the vault seems like in a desperate effort to reach the water, yearning to the source of life that lays behind it.

Samula cenote, deeper, darker and more blue

There is a primordial force coming out of those hidden secrets of the jungle. Here you can get a stronger connection with Mother Nature and you can maybe feel our planet breathing and living, if it were not for all the thousands tourists that visit the place at the same time everyday and that make almost impossible even to jump in the water. Despite the beauty of swimming in a cenote, I wonder if those places are for us and if we shouldn’t just leave them like that and allow only a sight of these natural wonders.

Said that, despite the tourists, both cenotes deserve a visit to fill your eyes of beauty, perfection and admiration.

Yucatan cenote, Mexico

Super populated by tourists, but still worth a visit

The tree roots coming down the vault looking for water
