Holuhrain volcano eruption in Iceland

The eruption of Holuhrain in Iceland as seen at 5000 feet

It is one in a lifetime opportunity and you know how much I love these kinds of chance. When there is a once in a lifetime thing to do I love to be on the main line, ready to get the opportunity.

So it happens that if you are in Iceland and you get an sms from someone asking you if you wanna take a flight over an erupting volcano, you just cannot say no. And by the time you realize what is happening, you found yourself on a small plane, taking off from Reykjavik, in the blue of Iceland.

Before you even arrive at the volcano scene, you have to cross the entire island. It is there you probably fall I love with the beauty of this incredible island. The air is as light as the plane, the sun gently touches the landscape underneath and opens up at neverending glaciers on one side and blue clear water lakes on another, embellished by top snowy mountain peaks and lava valleys.

Beauty of Iceland

You are given a chance to admire Mother Nature´s reign as an outsider, without even step on her ground, aware to see everything like the birds who fly in its air.

Since I arrived in Iceland I always wondered what there is in the middle of Iceland, there where nobody lives. Icelanders are very vague words to describe it. They always say vaguely: “Just nothing”. And all the time I heard this answer I always wonder what Nothing exactly means, what is this nothing they all talk about. Well, now I know it because I saw it. I have seen the “Nothing” of the middle of Iceland and it is true, the only word to describe it is “Nothing” but a wonderful one, one of those kinds that leave you speechless.

There is nothing in the middle of Iceland, in the so called Highlands, Nothing that can be barely described with words at least. You have to see it if you want to understand it.

Believe it or not, they call it “Nothing”.

When your eyes get accomplished to so much beauty around, you enter in the Vatnajokull area and Siggi the pilot tells you in few minutes, just behind the clouds, there will be the first site of the eruption. The heart beats start running fast, adrenaline too, and suddenly you get the sight of the red fire on top of a far away hill AND the heart explodes of excitement.

How is it flying over an erupting volcano? Well, impressive first of all if you consider that fire coming straight from the heart of the planet. Stunning when you see how powerful it is, and beautiful at the same time. A volcano eruption is similar to a geyser, but of fire.

Planet Earth feels so alive over there. You can feel it breathing, moving, you can really feel its impressive power, its sublime beauty, its astonishing violence. I am not joking when I say it feels a bit like being at the edges of Mordor, like being there where some occult power forces live, at one of the doors to another world of which we don’t know much about or simply at the door of the world creation.

Not much to add, really. Enjoy the album. It probably tells you more than thousands worlds.

The impressive view from the plane

Flying over Iceland beauty

Highlands in Iceland

Kilometers and kilometres of beauty right in the heart of Iceland

Ora lo so.

lava fields

Fields of empty black lava under the Vatnajokull vulcano

Non c’è niente in mezzo all’Islanda, nelle famose Highlands.

This is how Mother Earth creates new land

This is how Mother Earth creates new land
