Getting lazy in paradise!

Getting lazy in paradise!

After so many days in the jungle, without having a proper shower, sometimes without showering at all, and often without a lot of food, especially when we were in Guinea, it has been not only a relief but pure happiness to get to Ghana and rest on the peaceful and breathtaking shores of Ezile Bay.

We crossed Ivory Coast in very few days, and we didn’t have the chance to see that much, even though signs that we were re-approaching the civilisation were already in the air when we arrived in Yamoussoukrou and after to Abidjan. In the first town we went to visit the biggest church in the world, a huge building resembling St. Peters in Rome, but in the middle of nowhere, totally empty, impressive, especially for the useless amount of money they must have spent to build and maintain such an massive building in a place were they could have helped people in a different way. They say that church has been fully filled only twice in its

history, one when it was open by the pope and another time for the funerals of its creator. In Abdjan instead we ate the first pizza since we left Europe. It was simply great to have a small bite of junk food again, enriched by a great chocolate ice cream in one of the pastry shops of the town. Everytime we can taste again the little pleasures that back in our daily life belong to the normality, it gets a totally special flavour, that enhance our senses and most of all reminds us how lucky we are.

However, the top of all these experiences was when we got to Ezile Bay. We couldn’t believe at our eyes when we got there, we stepped out of the truck and found ourselves in one of the most beautiful places seen so far. The sandy and palmy beach was laying just in front of us, hidden in a cove where the ocean was gentle and touches of infinite blue could blow your thoughts and worries away.

A French lady had built a fantastic lodge there, ad for many days we have been the only guests and people around. At one end of the bay, there was a tiny village of fishermen, whose people were passing by our beach every day. The village itself was beautiful. There was a hand made wood bridge crossing it that was the centre of the life of its people, constantly busy in the sea and on the land. As everywhere else in Africa, its inhabitants were kind and friendly. The kids were all greeting us with “Hallo my friend” and were coming to give us their hand just to touch our white skin. At night the people of the village were all sleeping on the beach, and the night I saw them the full moon was shining in the sky, creating this sort of weird atmosphere where our steps looked so disturbing on that beach transformed in public bedroom, even if none of them said anything or complained. The people were just laying on the beach in the moonshine, in such a big connection with the Nature and the surrounding, being part of it, of its rhythm and circle, while the Nature itself keeps them alive and gives them what the daily need to survive in it. Beautiful to observe, their simple life is just so natural and spontaneous that you cannot stop admiring it and maybe feeling a bit jealous of their simple happiness.

In Ezile Bay we celebrated Elisabet’s and Thorkell’s birthdays and it was the last place where we were all together, as when we left Britney didn’t join the truck back, and she announced she is going to get back to the US, while Elisabet and Johanna informed us that in Accra they would have left as well to go back to Iceland. We will miss them a lot and the truck seems already so much emptier without them!

Africa is a great place, and travelling to Africa is wonderful, but I just don’t think it is for everyone. It requires spirit of adaptation that has to constantly be

supported by your willing to be there, to love it and to get further and further, in our case to get to Cape Town. Sometimes it’s not easy to be on the truck, in the heat all day, often on very bad roads where your back is constantly under pressure, you cannot even rest for a second, and at night you keep camping in the middle of the bush, without a proper wash for days and days, eating what the local markets have, and sometimes crossing villages with almost noting to eat except fried bananas. It’s not easy and it’s understandable, however this is Africa and when we all left for this trip I suppose we all knew how it was going to be. The truth is just that even if you imagine it, you can never understand how it is for real until you experience it on your skin. Personally, I love it. Quitting is totally out of my mind. I have been working too hard for this trip, dreaming of it for an entire year, and sometimes I still can’t believe where I am and what a great chance I have been given to live something so unique in life. I will make it to Cape Town, and I am sure of it. Unluckily the people who left, I am not I a rush to get back to my day life, and this is one of the reason I left everything in Amsterdam, I quit my job, left my house , sold my bike and closed all my bills. Like this I don’t really have anything left in case I change my mind, and can go straight to Cape Town, and then see what happens next.

Back to Ezile Bay, I spent 5 wonderful days over there, laying on the beach literally

all day, reading, sleeping and going in the ocean sometimes. We all got a lot of time for ourselves, to regenerate and get out energies back. It was pure bliss, almost a holiday inside the holiday. As planned since weeks in advance, thy guys killed a goat and then Andreas barbecued it. It was delicious, after 3 months of vegetarian meals together! Another night we bought a huge fish from one of the fishermen of the local village, and Sam and Jo cooked it for us. Delicious is just not enough to tell how good it was, and it was so big that the day after we barbecued the rest of the fish on the beach, drinking fresh coconut juice that Gunnar had got for us from the palms. It was a daydream life experience, that enriched all our senses and was the perfect way to welcome us to Ghana, a country we immediately felt we could love and fall in love.
