ice Caving with IceGuide.is has been a top experience here in Iceland!

It has been one of the most amazing experience of a lifetime: Ice caving in Iceland, under a glacier, under the same glacier last autumn I flew on to admire the volcano eruption. Ice and fire coming from the same place. This is the Vatnajokull Glacier, the biggest in Europe, and this is actually Iceland, its double essence that never stop to amaze yo and leave you speechless in front of her ecstatic beauty.

In the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the deep white of a glacier in winter, you would never ever expect such an incredible underworld.

Oskar from IceGuide.is brought us in the middle of it, he introduced us to his wonderworld, to its basic but fundamental rules, do not step where you don’t see footprints and do not leave signs on the ice, and accompanied us there where the magic happens, where a river under the glacier has carved the most beautiful of all Mother Nature’s temples, far away from everything and everybody, where nobody could find it or see it. Made of astonishing beauty, the ice cave opens up in all its majestic beauty and colours in front of my eyes.

The feeling you have is that you have been entered a temple, somewhere mystical, one of those few places on the planet where you really feel men have nothing to do with it. When I was left alone, or better when I run away from the tons of Asian tourists nowadays everywhere in Iceland, I felt the beauty and the silence around. And silence is what you need to admire and enjoy a place like that. Silence because it is needed to contemplate such a masterpiece and also because there is not much to say in front of it. It was almost emotional to touch the perfect and solid shapes of the ice, to feel it smooth and cold under your fingers, to look though it and see air, water and rocks trapped inside. It is like ice had suddenly frozen a moment of the eternal life of the Glacier, like in a photography, like in a memory. You are there witnessing the memory of the Glacier, of the Planet.

With the light shining, the ice keeps changing colour and, at your eyes, shape, too. Blue is the colour that belongs to it and to the ice. Oskar explains us that blue is the only colour that ice is not able to release through itself so it gets trapped under the ice vault and in days like that one, when there is not a lot of sun, you can see it in all its shiny splendour.

The cave is simply astonishing. It has different rooms, and in all of them the ice has been left alone to create wonders.

Every year these caves die around May, when they melt in the summer mild temperatures. A river, that is their creator, retakes possession of that space. And you will have to wait until October or November when explorers like Oskar and all the crew of Iceguide.is start looking for new caves in the glacier to hope to see them again. Two years ago there were no caves at all. This year two. You never know how things evolve, how the glacier changes and how the global warming affects the environment around.

Some suggestions for those who are interested in photography in the ice cave: you don’t need a tripod in there. There is more than enough light to shoot in perfect conditions all the time. Cloudy days are the best as the cave shines in the blue of the ice reflections. Tripod is really annoying in the cave, as you have to put your attention son so many things, among all the slippery surfaces and the beauty around.

Touring with Iceguide.is was a great experience. Groups are really small, you never feel a tourist, but more an adventurer with them. They run two tours daily, from November till the end of March, one at noon and one at 5pm. Pick up is at the Glacier Lagoon, from there they will drive you off road for half hour in order to reach the Glacier and the cave. Oskar is really experienced and nice, he will help everyone to put the helmet on and guide you on your adventure, leaving you a lot of time to explore, taking photos, talk about the ice. In the cave the group is alone, and this is something I really liked. You are not together with other people from other tours. There wouldn’t be enough space for it anyway. An unforgettable experience to do when you are in Iceland, in order to love and remember it even more.

Manu in Wonderland

The entrance to one of the two iced rooms. Wonderland.
