The golden dunes of Namibia

The golden dunes of Namibia

Soussuvlei, its sand dunes, the highest in the world, its shapes and colours, its silence and beauty deserve a special places among the unbelievable places of Africa and of the planet.

Neverending desert of Namibia

Neverending desert of Namibia

Namibia desert is neverending. For those arriving from North as we were at the time of those photos, for those coming from the real black Africa, for those who had crossed it entirely, Namibia is like a door, a neverending desertic gate that extends his legacy for miles and miles, connecting and at the same time separating two worlds, the Black Africa and the White one, who we first met in Senegal kilometres and kilometres ago, so close and so distant from each other if seen from the desert.

On the desert roads of Africa

On the desert roads of Africa

There are many unbelievable places in Namibia: from Etosha National Park to the ghost town of Kolmanskopp, and Soussuvlei is another hidden gem of a desert that never stops to astonish for its richness and beauty. It is hot in Soussuvlei during the day, and as soon as you step out you feel the desert heat burning your neck and skin immediately. It is a different kind of heat compared to the humid Central Africa; in the desert the heat is dry, powerful, heavy, the sand dunes on both sides of the road become higher and higher and like giants observe your steps, preserve them, make them heavier and longer, ready to get transformed as soon as the wind blows their shapes away.

Shaped by the wind

Shaped by the wind

Soussuvlei dunes are some of he most irresistible in the world. You observe them with a mist of wonder and reverence, thinking it s not a big deal to reach the top in few easy steps. But, remembering the Sahara dunes, those of Soussuvlei are much higher and my 1st impressions to make it to the top in an easy and quick way, was quickly dismissed when I started to walk on top on it, and get burned b the sand and the sun. The more you walk the more it gets hot and the top further.

The real Namibian gold

The real Namibian gold

The landscape around assumes a gold colour and when you have walked up enough and turn your back to look at the landscape you understand the wonder you are surrounded by, how high you are, how far you went, how distant and small the others are behind you. It is almost like a life metaphor and despite the heat that makes you feel dizzy, despite the sunburnt and the imminent headache you know you are gonna have if you keep standing in the sun like a cactus, the sensation from up there is priceless.
His majesty the desert lays under your feet shining. And that’s one of the most amazing view I ever got in my life. There is no human sound reaching your ears when you are on the dunes. Everything is silent. The only sound you hear is the one of the wind, the enemy of the desert and its creator at the same time.

His majesty the Desert

His majesty the Desert

I played with the sand and my camera, the game of shadows and lights, with the flowers of the desert and the tiny brave spiders who are the only real inhabitants of those lands on my way back, when I understood it was a very bad idea to go up there without bringing a bottle of water. Distances in the desert are not what they look like, space and time get stretched in your mind and what it seems a short walk becomes neverending, especially if you don’t have the right tools to do it.

Leaving Soussuvlei

Leaving Soussuvlei

When you leave Sussuvlei and leave behind its dramatic dunes, that become to smaller and smaller before disappearing in the pink colours of the sky, you know it is gonna be cold soon, you know you have been witness of something amazing, you admire the dunes at both sides of the road, all of them different like human beings, and you know you will never stop loving Africa.
Let’s get the photos talk, as thousands words will never ever give you an idea of what thee is down there.

Desertification is becoming a dramatic problem in Namibia

Desertification is becoming a dramatic problem in Namibia

Another incredible view of such an incredible beauty

Another incredible view of such an incredible beauty

And a gorgeous sunset, the last amazing gift of the desert
